Energy Per Token
  • “How Hungry is AI?” (arXiv:2505.09598, 2025) — measured Claude 3.7 Sonnet at 5.5 Wh per long query (10K in / 1.5K out)
  • Epoch AI (2024) — bottom-up GPU energy model: E = tokens × 2 × active_params / (GPU_FLOPS × utilization) × power
  • Simon Couch (2026) — Claude Code field estimates: ~1,950 Wh/MTok output, ~390 Wh/MTok input for Sonnet-class
  • Output tokens use ~5x more energy than input (autoregressive decode vs parallel prefill)
  • Cross-model scaling via Anthropic pricing ratios as compute proxy
Anthropic Infrastructure & Cooling
  • AWS Trainium2 (Project Rainier: IN, PA, MS) — direct-to-chip liquid cooling in a closed-loop system. AWS states this “does not increase water consumption.” Facility WUE: 0.15 L/kWh; AI rack estimate: ~0.08 L/kWh
  • Google Cloud TPU v6+ (Trillium, Ironwood) — liquid cooling with split-flow cold plates since TPU v3. Removes 70–75% of rack heat through liquid, not evaporative. Per-rack PUE: 1.02–1.03. Facility WUE: ~1.04 L/kWh; TPU rack estimate: ~0.30 L/kWh
  • Azure NVIDIA (Grace Blackwell, Vera Rubin) — transitioning to liquid cooling for AI clusters. Microsoft historical WUE: ~1.8 L/kWh; AI rack estimate: ~0.70 L/kWh

Facility-level WUE averages overstate water use for AI inference because modern accelerator racks use liquid cooling, not evaporative. We estimate rack-level WUE per provider, then blend equally: (0.08 + 0.30 + 0.70) / 3 ≈ 0.36 L/kWh

  • PUE 1.12 — blended from AWS 1.15, Google 1.09 (2024 sustainability reports)

Only inference compute is counted (token generation & prefill). Tool execution wait time, network latency, and idle time are excluded.
